A catalyst is any substance that increases the rate of a reaction without itself being consumed. Most solid catalysts are metals or oxides, sulfides, and halides of metallic elements and of the semi-metallic elements of aluminum, boron, and silicon. Typical of these reactions are acid–base reactions, oxidation–reduction reactions, and formation of coordination complexes. Catalyzed reactions form the basis of many industrial chemical processes.
With solid catalysts, the reaction mechanism is strongly influenced by surface and structure properties. Micronization enhances the surface area and therefore the reactivity of a catalyst.
